Half a Billion Yahoo Emails Hacked by Russian Spies in 2014, Finally Charged
Written by: Kyle Lillywhite

Back in 2014, four people, including two russian spies, stole data from more than half a billion yahoo accounts, which NBC news calls “the largest known data breaches in American history.” More than 500 yahoo users were informed that any of their information could of been stolen; their email, home address, debit/credit card information, passwords to different websites, etc.
The suspects have been found; Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin. They are both part of the Russian federal secret service. The other two people, Alexsey Belan, a US wanted cyber-criminal, and Karim Baratov. The two Russians paid Belan and Baratov to hack yahoo.
This was the first criminal case brought by the US Justice department against the Russian government. The justice department says that the Russian Federal Secret Service were trying to get information that could possibly help them avoid being noticed by any US officials outside the US.
I asked 8th Grader Max Hall “Do you think that we should make our information and emails more secure?” He said “Yeah they should be secure, because once you have an email, you have everything.” I also asked him “What should we of done when the russians stole data from half a billion americans?” he said “We should’ve found who led the operation and stopped them.”

Winter Storm Stella causing Havoc to the Northeast
Written and Interviewed by: Nicolas Torres
7th grade staff writer
I interviewed Benjamin J. Aguallo, the editor of the RRMS News Column for the Raven Express.
Do you have any advice towards the people in the Northeast to stay safe with all the snow?
Benjamin - Stay indoors, unless it is an emergency. Only go out for food or use the food in your house and don’t go out for unnecessary things.
Do you think that people should take snowstorms lightly or very precautiously and why?
Benjamin - Well it depends on how bad the storm is, because there is a difference between a light snow and blizzard. I feel as if they should take any snowstorm cautiously, but that doesn't mean to go hands on deck with a two inch snowstorm.
Nicolas - What do you mean by hands on deck?
Benjamin - Like, “Nobody leave the house, get to the bunker!”
Have you ever experienced a large snow storm, or a large storm in general?
Benjamin - I have.
Nicolas - What was it like?
Benjamin - The power went out, the thunder sounded like a baby was screaming at the top off their lungs. And one of our trees was struck by lightning and split right in half, and caught on fire.
Were you scared during the storm?
Benjamin - No not really, I don’t really have a fear of big storms.
Nicolas - But you would be precautious during it right?
Benjamin - Yeah.
Currently in the Northeast area of North America, there is a Winter Storm that between 3 and 5 feet of snow to some areas, and a 58 inches to Vermont. So far, there has been 16 deaths due to the storm, and more than 6,000 flights were grounded. It also shut down many major cities such as Boston and New York. It knocked the power out for over half a million people. The Airlines in the Northeastern part are working hard to be able to operate on a normal schedule on Thursday. The sleet, snow, and heavy winds have turned many roads and sidewalks dangerously slippery, and cities are taking longer than usual to clean up the mess.
Governor Andrew Cuomo stated on Wednesday, March 15th, that he will send 100 members of the National Guard, and 100 plows to help with removing all the snow. But was it a blizzard? Well, experts say no. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in South Burlington found that the winds only hit 34 mph, but to have a blizzard, the winds have to be a sustained 35 mph.

Whales Stranded and Hundreds Die

South Island, a group of 240 whales become stranded on South Island, New Zealand. This is one of the biggest in record, volunteers struggle to return animals to the sea. New Zealand has one of the highest rate of whales stranding in the world. New Zealand’s whale stranding record was way far from how many animals was washed up on the coast. On Saturday February 11, 2017 volunteers brought more than 650 pilot whales that swum ashore along the 23km Farewell Spit since that Thursday. About 335 whales have died along the South Island sands. In 1918, New Zealand had 1,000 pilot whales on the Chatham Island sands. There are a variety of theories that why might whales be stranded. One theory is that it might have been bleached meaning that they have been whiten by exposure of sunlight or a chemical process. Another theory is that they might have did that themselves or they have trying to get away from their predator and they got far on land.

Rhino Found Dead
By: Hunter Smith
6th grade staff writer
Tuesday morning in a french zoo the zookeepers found a rhino dead. According the the zookeepers, during the night poachers broke into the zoo. They shot a rhino in the head and then used a chainsaw to cut its horn off. It was a 4 year old rhino. The poachers fled before they could take the next horn.
They say that the poachers didn't have the time to get the other rhinos. “It was unbelievable” Park director Thierry Duguet said. The rhino was one of the most popular attractions. It was the first act of violence and had never happened before. The rhino was a type of breed that was endangered.
The Zookeepers said that the second horn of the rhino was cut, but not removed. The cops think that they were disturbed or their equipment messed up. The estimated amount of the horn is about 30,000 to 40,00 euros (30,000 euros = 31,702.94 usd). The cops found a trade network selling the rhino horns, and they believe that the horn will be sold there.

Bear Falls to it's Death from a Helicopter
By: Kyle Lillywhite
8th grade staff writer
After a rescue mission in the jungles of Thailand, an asian black bear fell out of a helicopter and sadly fell to it’s death. It was found in a village near Khao Yai, injured after being kept as an illegal pet.
The bear was given medical care and then was tranquilized and carried under the helicopter in a net. The helicopter’s destination was a national park in Prachin Buri, but died minutes after take off. Some people deny the bear was ever tranquilized, so the bear maybe freaked out and fell out of the net, but the pilots confirmed that the bear was indeed put to sleep, and turbulence made the bear fall out of the net.
Ways it could've been avoided
The incident could've easily been avoided if instead of dangerously being taken away under a helicopter in a net, it could've been driven in a truck. It also could’ve been taken to a place called Khao Laem, a spot miles away from where the helicopter first took off.
8th Grader Max Hall says “You need to think about what type of net you use, how old it is, the weight of the bear, what you're flying over, etc. If you are flying over somewhere dangerous, be careful.”

Riots have Appeared in an Immigrant-Dominated
Suburb in Sweden
Interview Questions:
Nicolas, World News Writer - Ben, what is your opinion on the riots that have occurred in Sweden?
Ben, the Ridge Road Current Events Editor - My opinion on this is that rather than rioting and causing a huge ruckus, they should go to the Stockholm officials and give them their opinion then try attempt to make an agreement that benefits both of them.
Nicolas - So more of a peaceful way of settling their problems and concerns?
Ben - Yes.
Nicolas - Now what if the Officials were to ignore them, what do you think they should do? Riot more?
Ben - I have a strong belief in peaceful protests. A country cannot run if they do not respect their citizens opinions. Soon enough officials will have to listen to their citizens.
Nicolas - Okay Ben, thank you for your time.
Ben - No problem.
