Ridge Road’s 8th anniversary!

March 1, 2017, Ridge Road Middle School has officially been in business for 8 years! It is also the day our former Principal, Mrs. Tanner, has begun serving as Ridge Road’s first Principal. As you may know from our last article, The Charlotte Observer has talked badly about our school with no proof to back it up, but since then we have made this school the most successful and most high flying CMS school out there. We made memories and started traditions, and even raised awareness for some things. So, why don’t we settle down and take a quick look at what this school has done for us and for CMS?

Mrs. Tanner has recently announced to the public that she will be leaving Ridge Road Middle School in March of 2017, to start another school. Many students at Ridge Road Middle School are sad to see her go. Mrs. Tanner did a stellar job as principal, earning countless awards, including the Principal of the Year! She has been with this school since the absolute beginning when it opened in 2009.
For almost eight years, Mrs. Tanner has taken care of this school as if it were her child, constantly making sure the floors are clean and the students are respectful. “One of my greatest achievements is being able to watch this school being built from the ground up, and being a part of that process,” Mrs. Tanner tells us. She has treated us with immense kindness, but also as adults. We have made countless memories with her. We stood alongside her while we made this school the safest and most successful, as well as the most fun school in all of CMS.
Ms. Wright, a staff member at Ridge, had a few things to say about Mrs. Tanner leaving. “Mrs. Tanner leaving is very sad for all of us, but I am excited for her because she has the opportunity to do what she did here, which is start a new school and have a chance to influence other students and parents,” she says.
We, the students, will all miss you Mrs. Tanner, but especially the teachers who were there with you since the school opened its doors. We wish you the best of luck with your new school!
Before the school’s doors even opened, many newspapers, including The Charlotte Observer, spoke about Ridge Road as if it was a low-income, below average school with nothing special about it without any proof. As time went on, Mrs. Tanner raised the haters expectations, with an increase in test grades and a large amount of parents volunteering. While beating the odds of several North-Charlotte parents, Karen Petterson, was a little scared of sending her daughter to a school with such a bad reputation. She is the former PTA President of RRMS.
We asked Mrs. Tanner how she felt about the students at this school. Without hesitation, she responded, “Oh, I love them. Even though there are some students who do not follow the the Raven Way, I still love them all. It’s what makes the decision to leave here so difficult.” When we spoke to Mrs. Tanner, it really gave us a bigger picture on how pure-hearted she is. We asked her if she was nervous when giving the Principal of the Year award, and she said not at all. “ I was not nervous because I spoke from my heart, and I talked about all the things the people here have done. It was not about me, it was about everything that we have done at this school. It was about the teachers and about all the kids,” she tells us.
We love you Mrs. Tanner!
